Corporation Earth

A Novel by Shawn Carron

Preface

Since the beginning of recorded history, a cycle of rise and decline has followed a specific and never-ending pattern. Nations would climb to great heights, dominating everything and everyone around them and over the course of hundreds or even thousands of years would slowly begin to deteriorate and fade into the history books. New nations would rise from the ashes of the old, they themselves building on the greatness of those before them and start the cycle anew.

New governments would take the place of the old and a new chapter would begin to be written. There would be a pinnacle or an apex that when seen from the passage of time could be said to have been the tipping point, the moment where the beginning of the end had started.

And so, it was to be again.

The decline of the current government system did not happen overnight, it never does.  It began with the war on terror and ended with the fall of the economy.  No longer were fossil fuels a viable resource to carry us further into the future.  New alternatives were being sought and with these new developments came new means of power, power to drive our nations into a clean future and inevitably, the power to control the masses. It was not something that was seen right away, and no one was alarmed as the steady takeover of the corporations came into effect.

The power of the corporations grew slowly over time and with this power the governments of the world slowly lost control.  Now it was the large corporations that decided laws and these same corporations that policed them. Their Department for Public Safety made sure of that. They were a power unto themselves and with no one to stand in their way they grew to indescribable heights.

This was seen as an era of a utopian world emerging from the darkness of the 21st century. In reality nothing could be further from the truth.

In the beginning the public saw the corporations as the saviours of humanity. Their work on alternative fuels and energy sent the people of Earth into a new era of bountifulness never seen before. Cities rose up into the clouds and covered nearly every inch of the planet’s surface, health care was free and limitless. Cybernetic body modifications allowed for a near eternity of life and nano medical technology slowly eradicated most diseases.

In the beginning.

While it can be said that mankind was by far at its richest in terms of innovation, it was slowly, imperceptibly, becoming a police state as the corporations began getting bigger and more powerful. It was subtle at first, bylaws invented to encourage the use of the new fuels or transportation, and in time grew to where the government was slowly phased out altogether.

And like all forms of ruling classes before them, it was not long before corruption and greed ruled supreme once again.

After all, we are still human aren't we?
